St. Martin’s was begun in 1912 on what used to be the western edge of Calgary at 28th St in Killarney. For over 90 years it served west Calgary into East Springbank. In 1999 the congregation sold its historic building and relocated its Sunday worship to the Calgary Academy to better serve the new neighbourhoods growing westwards. In 2004, the congregation bought a magnificent site of land at the corner of St. Moritz Drive (formerly 89th St.) and 17th Ave. SW with the intent to build a new home for the parish. In July 2007, St. Martin’s received land-use re-designation by the city, for a future church building project. After many twists and turns and a realization that building a new space on this land was not possible, the parish opened itself up to a new options. A church building not far from our land was up for sale in 2019 and the parish voted to buy it, renovate it and sell our land. This new space will allow the parish to live into its vision of offering meaningful worship and formation and be a place open to the larger community. Our new home is meant to be a space for others to use and to be responsive to the needs of the community around us–a community home with a spiritual heart! We are excited to discover what ministries, programs and events will occur in our new home that nourish us and respond to the needs of our neighbours.
